| Safety On The Roads Of
Guam |
|
Unless otherwise posted, the speed limits on most roads
will be between 35 and 45 MPH.
It is important not to exceed the speed limits. Most accidents are
a result of excessive speed.
Guam's roads are known to be slippery when wet. Avoid sudden starts
and stops as well as abrupt lane changes because this could induce
skidding out of control.
If you should begin to skid, do not slam on the brakes. Take your
foot of the gas peddle and let the car slow down on its own. Gently
turn your stirring wheel in the direction of the skid. As your vehicle
straightens, straighten your wheel to avoid skidding in the opposite
direction. When the car is straight, gently press your brake to slow
down.
Driving too slowly is also a hazard. If you are on the main roads
it is important to maintain a suitable pace so that other cars do
not become impatient and try to pass you, causing an accident. If
you must drive very slowly, drive in the far right lane in order to
give cars a chance to pass on the left.
Be alert for pedestrians that my suddenly try to cross the road. Also
be aware of motorcyclist that may suddenly appear from behind you.
Do not tailgate. It is important to give yourself and your car plenty
of reaction time should the car in front suddenly stop.
Government of Guam school buses are routinely on the road. Traffic
in all directions must come to a complete stop when approaching a
school bus that is loading and unloading children. |
