The Santa Marian Kamilan Park, located in the southern village of Merizo, has quite a story behind it. The park was constructed in honor of Our Lady of Camarin, the patroness saint of Guam. As the legend states, the statue was escorted to Guam 300 years ago on the back of two giant crabs. It was then found by local fishermen that immediately presented it to the Spanish governor. It has since been housed in the Cathedral in Agana and has survived wars, typhoons, fires and eathquakes without being harmed. Twice a year the community of Guam gathers to pay its respects to this Saint, once on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and again on the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. If you would like to see the statue itself, it is housed at the Cathedral Basilica in the village of Agana. |
