Trees and Flowers
Plumeria
There are more than 600 species of plants that surrounds Guam in lush vegetation; 100 of the 600 species are trees. The Chamorro people have become quite adept at using these plants to survive in an island environment, in both a medicinal as well as a structural sense. Of the many varieties of flowering herbs, vines, shrubs, and trees, some are native to the island while many have been introduced during the Spanish and American eras.

The flame tree is one of Guam's most spectacular sights, with its bright red and orange flares amongst a background of vibrant green foliage. However, the famous and slow growing efil tree is Guam's official tree; with its rich and dense-grained wood, it has become a favorite among local artists that create spectacular woodcarvings. The official flower of the island is the puti tai nobio, known in English as the bougainvillea; it can be viewed throughout the island. However, the most popular flower for making flower leis and head wreaths is the silky and fragrant plumeria (or Kalachucha), which can be found in a variety of brilliant colors.

Animals and Birds
Before European contact the only animals on land were probably birds and the endangered Marianas fruit bat. However, since 17th century contact a number of domesticated animals have been introduced such as cattle, horses, pigs, goats, deer, and carabao (water buffalo). Several land crabs and even a species of monitor lizard can also be found on Guam. These lizards, known locally as iguanas can reach a length of five feet. In addition to these land animals, several wonderful species of birds can be witnessed on Guam despite the presents of the nonpoisonous brown tree snake that preys on their eggs.

The most impressive animal life forms, however, can be viewed in Guam's tropical waters. Roaming through the oceans 350 forms of colorful corals is a plethora sea creatures that amaze and astonish divers with their spectacular diversity. Even from the comfort of a boat or cliffside, one can often witness beautiful spinner dolphins, green sea turtles and an occasional surface visit from the often misunderstood manta ray.
