Guam's Unique Culture

Although Guam has become home to a variety of people from around the world, the native Chamorro culture still pervades throughout the way of life on Guam. Interestingly, this culture has been molded over the last few centuries to resemble a quite unique and dynamic culture. Although much of the traditions resemble ideals brought by Spanish missionaries in the 17th century, some of the original culture can be witnessed through the Chamorro language and folklore, which was retained by word of mouth by the women in the matrilineal society that existed before the Western arrival. Furthermore, traditional methods of fishing, weaving, and medicine are still practiced today.
As in the ancient past, family unity is extremely important, even in today's modern society. However, today much of the family gatherings revolve around traditions that were brought by the Spanish missionaries. The Church is generally the center of Chamorrro life, with many celebrations having Catholic roots: such as fiestas, weddings, christenings, novenas, funerals, and death-anniversary rosaries. Locals regularly get together to enjoy good food and good company. Parties are abundant on Guam and most are open for all to attend. The people have a very giving nature and enjoy sharing their prosperity with each other.
